I want to tell you about Bo Petrie

Hi kids and grandkids!  We had a great week.  Monday was devotional with the president.  He's started having the ending of the meeting in English.  So the elders called on me for the closing prayer.  So I gave it in English.  First prayer in English since we've been here.  I prayed that I could pray good.  Have you ever done that?
Tuesday we went to the San Geronimo chapel early and oriented/ had them fill out our packets for 6 coming missionaries, three from North America, one from Honduras and two from here that will serve here until their visas come to go to Mexico.
We ate with them and their companions then went to the temple to ready the clothes (la ropa) for the 8 missionaries going home.
Today is veintisiete del febrero.  (It's the 4th of July for the Dominican Republic, so we only worked 1/2 day.  We did hang a huge Dominican flag that Dad wanted to buy from our balcony.  The flag has a big white cross on red red background with the scripture in the middle opened to John, and "The truth shall make you free."
NOW, I want to tell you about Bo Petrie.  He was finishing his mission and came to the capitol on a guagua (a little bus) on the outskirts of the city.  The assistants asked us to go pick up he and his companion.  We found them in a huge bus transferring area just swarming with people and motorcycles and beat up buses and taxis and people selling all kinds of stuff and tons of garbage.  They were glad to see us, then said they had a pair of shoes to give to someone at the MTC or CCM on the other side of the city--He'd hoped to make a delivery and had no way to get there and not much time before the go home activities began.  So Dad and I said we'd take him and tried to hurry.  It was a busy time of day and the traveling was slow so we had time to visit with him.  He is from Oregon.  He asked how we as a couple met (lots of missionaries ask that.)  So I asked how his parents met.  He said they met at college in Lamoni, Iowa..  Dad and I both know that is the college for the Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He said both his parents were members of the Re-organized Church (RLDS), both sets of his grandparents are Reorganites.  His great grand parents were too.  In fact, his family goes way back to the days of Joseph Smith.  His parents married and went to Oregon for a job.  He and his brothers and sisters were born there.  Their family was active in the local Reorganized church.  He said they have quite a few congregations there in his part of Oregon.  His brothers and sisters began to marry and were no longer interested in the church.  Elder Petrie or Bo, went with some friends to the LDS church.  There he said he felt the Spirit as he heard the teachings.  His parents weren't too upset about him joining, because he at least was belonging to a church and wasn't getting into bad things like his siblings.  He wanted to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because he knew it was the true church and had the fullness, whereas the one he left had become just another protestant church not standing for much.  He laughed when he told us about receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood because his Mom said, "now you and I both have the Priesthood."  He said he was going home, had wanted to go with his missionary buddies to BYU, but he said "the Lord hasn't prepared me for the last two years to be with lots of Mormons at college.  He felt he should go home and work on his family.  In fact, he teased, "maybe I'll go to Lamoni College!"
Even with generations of his family belonging to a church, he could be objective or open minded enough to listen and discover for himself.  I found it fascinating!  We have met such fine young people!  We have such fine people at home, can't wait to see you all!
     We love you so much!

Hi Elder Scharman, we got your letter and it was the highlight of the week or month!  Oh, first off, we owe you change. It wasn't that much and that could have been our treat to you for all you did for us.
So you have a great job for now!  Hooray!  And you get to use your Spanish and they work around your college.  Bet Weber State is fun and busy and rewarding. That's neat about your associate degree!
Things here are good.  Today was traslados.  We had only 6 missionaries come, and 2 are temporals.  We only had about 10 last time.  We did our training/fill out papers at San Geronimo, ate with the new ones then went to the temple to pull the temple clothes for those going home:  Elder Chinchilla, Elder Midgley, Elder Tuanama, Elder Samaniego, Elder Larsen, Hna Becar and Munguia.  The president led the session.  We showed the Clawsons how to pull the clothes for each missionary.  They will take our place.  No other couple was assigned to our mission and the President decided to have us train them 2 weeks ago.
Yes we go home soon.  March 10th is the day.  It will be great to be home but we enjoyed it here.  Our Sacrament Meeting is March 17th at 9am just off the freeway at the Layton Hills Mall Exit--forgot the number 331?  It would be fun to have you come.  Seems like you should be on the program or something; maybe play or sing?  I wonder if anyone else would want to come join us in a Called to Serve/Placentero nos trabajar medley or something.  Sounds fun anyway.
Well, keep up the good work!  Thanks for your example and for touching our lives!

Susan,
Thanks so very much for your wonderful note.  The pictures were super!
I’m sure you have really helped there in your own personal way.
I’m reminded of verse 3 of “I’ll go where you want me to go” which fits your welling service and sacrifice:
There's surely somewhere a lowly place
In earth's harvest fields so wide
Where I may labor through life's short day
For Jesus, the Crucified.
So trusting my all to thy tender care,
And knowing thou lovest me,
I'll do thy will with a heart sincere:
I'll be what you want me to be.
I can’t believe your mission is almost over!
As you know, I wanted to have a get-together for all of our siblings to celebrate your return this spring, but because of Jo’s health last summer and fall, we never finished the deck so we could all have a BBQ.  Hopefully we will have it done later this fall so all of us can get together then.
Sorry the BBQ won’t happen this spring.
Love, Bruce
P.S.  Please let us know when you are getting back to the airport.

I ALWAYS HAVE A HAPPY FEELING WHEN I GO TO CHURCH!

Today was Sunday, up and left by sevenish.  Got there and 5 of the brethren greeted us at the door and shook our hands and spoke to me in English.  "Good Morning"  "How are you"  (First time.)  I answered in English and then Spanish.  Jim helped me test the piano/organ pedal in the chapel and then we went our separate ways.  I went into Relief Society, turned on the fans and lights (only when it's overcast, they don't usually turn on the lights.  I set up the chairs and then the 2 sets of sister missionaries came, we exchanged hugs and kisses and they sat by me.  The president arrived gave hugs and kisses, wrote on the blackboard.  Then began to hum the tune she wants to sing, I flipped through--found it, cincuenta y cinco I called out. (55).  God Speed the Right.  She smiled then she asked me to lead it and we began the meeting.  I say, "Uno, dos y tres" then begin.  Then we taught our SS class.  Dad taught, I wrote on the board.  (He'd given me the answers in Spanish yesterday.  Then I had them look up scriptures.  Oh, and I called on them to give prayers:  "Puede hacer la oracion."  (would you give the prayer.)  I should have said por favor (please.)  Sometimes all I can get out is little and simple.  But I bore my testimony before we closed saying how important el Plan de Salvacion is!  The whole purpose is to get us as families back to Heavenly Father.  I said how special they all are (we had 6 today.)  That the el Espiritu Santo testificar (The Holy Ghost has testified) to me how important and special they each are to Him.
Then I played for Sac Mtg.  The counselor in the Branch Presidency came to put up the numbers.  He mentioned something.  I said, "el himno intermedio. (Intermediate hymn) He nodded.  He posted the numbers and I stayed at the piano/organ so I wouldn't have to shut it on and off and wait for it to reboot. Then the meeting (la reunion) ended and I put on the speakers' hymn that she quoted from in her talk:  "Cuantas Bendiciones"  (Count your Many Blessings.)  Some little boys came up to play.  I pointed out a few notes, then how to turn it off.  Too bad I couldn't have worked with the little ones in Primary, played with them, gave simple lessons.  Maybe it wasn't meant to be.  (I would have felt more comfortable.)  Anyway, next week we are giving our lesson on Music.  We will give a hymn book out as a handout.  They are 75 cents here.  I will do a mini conducting class/keyboarding class besides talk about the "importancia de musica."  Then the next week it's Fast Sunday, then our last Sunday (I think we will have packages of cookies to have a "Linger Longer" after and then we'll fly out the next day!!  Gracias todas por su ayuda!  Thanks everyone for your help!
Love,

Surprise!  Yes, this is me.  I really appreciate your emails.  Roger is sending this for me----
Connie and Ron Barlow had their farewell talk and will head for Texas soon.
Well, keep up the good work you're doing.  We often sit behind Amy and husband and daughter in Sacrament Meeting.  Their little one is very active and bright.  I appreciate your service.  Love, Janice.

It's expiacion! :)

We heard from Elder Reeder this week!  He called to tell us he is engaged!
He asked Elder Schmidt how things were in the office.  Jim said he was comfortable with it all!  Yet many things were breaking down.  A wire hanging in front of the outside gate, the safe sticks, the outside door lock is off, the only way to get in is the click on the truck keys.  (Elder Schmidt had his key stuck in it 3 times.)  Elder Reeder laughed.  He told Hermana Schmidt that he asked his gal to marry him by going to the Up House in Herraman.  Up was their first date.  His Mom went ahead with 50 balloons and tied them to the house.  He said he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.  He said she is like him, that's why he loves her so much.  They are going to live in Hyde Park while he finishes his degree in information systems and Business.  She is in Health care.  Then he'll probably get a masters.  We said she was lucky to get him.  He said he was the lucky one!  They'll be married Jun 7th and we're invited.  He said he'll definitely be there when we get home.

Elder and Sister Schmidt,

I'm so sorry I have been so slow at responding! School is getting going, an it's been a little crazy! How are you doing? It's crazy it's already 2014- and you are almost finishing your mission. I would be more than happy to fix my error on the bookmark. I just need you to send it as an attachment in the original format. For example it should be saved on the computer as a "publisher" document. If you attach it in this format I can edit it and send it back. If you have any questions give me a call, I'm not in school today so I can help! Thanks!

Hi Nancy!  Sounds like the blessing was nice!  Three cute boys!  You have three cute boys!  And to be with Brian the weekend before sounds like an awesome time!  Bet Landon's party was fun!
Somebody said the Super bowl was last weekend, but we never saw a score and I saw a lot of emails of snacks and ways to celebrate the big game.  (I got on some free junk mail sites I guess), Anyway we turned on the TV before going to bed and it was on--22 to 0.  We were so excited!  Darren has always been a Seahawk's fan (I made his big quilt in their colors.)  We called him. He was thrilled!  He'd been checking the score off and on.  He said don't you remember Mom, both those teams were my favorites.  I'd sort of forgotten about Denver.  Anyway, Nathan was probably cheering for them both too, having served a mission there.
Well good to hear from you!  Glad you have had such a nice trip.

Very interesting and very colorful pictures!    You are really having some great experiences.

Thank you for your phone call yesterday - sorry it was kind of crazy.  We hadn't been here too long and Megan's parents were here and we were getting ready for a party for Landon.
It was very nice of you to call and think about them when they were blessing the baby.  We went to their ward this morning for the blessing and it was all very nice. (I'll put in some pictures in the newsletter)

I can't believe you're down to your last month!   I'm sure you have really mixed feelings;  ready to be home and see all your family and then leaving all the wonderful people you have met.

Anyway - you are probably not big football fans - I'm not really - but the Super Bowl was today between Denver and Seattle and Seattle won!   Only second championship of any Seattle sports team to win a national championship!  Take care and have a good week - love, Nancy & Ray

Family Reunion 2014

Well everyone, we have decided on the reunion.  It will be from Wednesday August 13 to Friday August 15 with Saturday a travel day home.  Come to all of it or part.  Brent has invited us for Wednesday--some will have to stay in a motel with swimming pool.  We will begin with a dinner that night. provided by us parents or come earlier for a campus tour.  That means that kids could go to part of a day in school or parents in their workplace.  Thursday we will move to West Yellowstone for a two night stay provided by parents--this will include a nice dinner each night.  Saturday would be a travel day home.  More details will be forthcoming, but I need to know if you are coming--the motel booked me for 7 rooms with the understanding that I would let them know if we needed all the rooms.  My thought is that most important is the association between us not the scenery.  With this in mind I tried to book a condo or big house where we could all stay--but too late for this summer and very pricey.  Another year in another location.  The housing in the park was all booked but luckily I found this one after much effort.  PLEASE LET US KNOW SOON OF YOUR PLANS so we can finalize the reservations.  More details-itinerary coming.  So you know, we considered many options including Park City.  We hope to do them all in time.

They changed our flight a little--you should  have gotten the changes.  Dinner after.  This country has become our home-I am finally more comfortable.  Last Sunday I asked the branch president how we could help.  I will be leaving most of my clothes, and we plan to buy many new hymn books for them.  He asked for money to help young men who are planning  on missions.  This branch, all our missionaries and mission president have become our family--I even drive Dominican!  Heaven help you Utahans-- just get out of my way.         DAD

We need your prayers!! Necesitamos sus oraciones!

Hi family!  There's a lot going on in the family and we need everyone's prayers:

Ashley is recovering from a very bad injury to shoulder and arm and Claire's been sick.
Annette's family have all had colds and there is new baby/diabetes challenges.
Andrea's family are getting bad colds and they have health challenges.
Amy's family is having a new one and preparing to move.
Darren's family:  quoting Darren "I almost lost my honey last week."  Challenges of Miscarriage and Cameron having major surgery this Friday for his kidney.
Brent's family with Judith unable to use her hand for another 6 weeks and tons of stitches.

We love you all so much!!  We know you all are in Heavenly Father's care!  But he still wants us to ask for what we need.  I have a testimony of the prayer of prayer.  Just today, no it was yesterday.  We went through each bank item with the president.  Each expenditure must have 2 receipts (in this country).  The elders bought materials for a plumber to fix a house.  The two receipts didn't match.  The president looked like "Why didn't you get them to do this right".  We prayed, then asked the elders.  How come there was a difference between the two receipts of $128. They were worried about what to do.  They kind of backed away worrying. Where did the money go?  One turned around picked up a scrap of paper off a table in the back where lots of work and stuff had piled up.  He opened it.  It was the receipt for $128.  Boy Elder Midgley said, an angel helped us with that one!!
Love,
Mom & Dad
